Peabody Marriott Hotel--Peabody, MA LWVMA Convention. The Future of Our Democracy: What's Next?--The keynote speaker for the banquet on Friday night is Dr. Meira Levinson, associate professor of education at Harvard. For Dr. Levinson, "the future of our democracy" lies with engaging young people. Her latest book, No Citizen Left Behind, argues that the US suffers from a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and anti-democratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by the No Child Left Behind education law. ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND THE CONVENTION! Members, family and friends are welcome to attend the banquet (tickets are $55).

Hamilton-Wenham Library LWV Town Meeting Study Action Planning. Do you believe you have access to all the information you need from our town officials? Some of us answer with a quick "NO!" The League can and does play a visible role in advocating for better information to educate all residents, not just those active in government, prior to Town Meeting so they can be informed voters.

What information should we be getting, where should it be available, and when should it be there?

Our most recent local study, the "Town Meeting Best Practices Study," provides us with a position from which we can continue to publically advocate and change the ways things operate.

Join us on January 15 to brainstorm what the League can do to help all residents feel better informed, better educated, and better prepared. Pizza will be provided!
